Healthy Eating

The Australian Government Department of Health and Aging has developed the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating.

The guide identifies five main food groups:

·        Bread, cereals, rice, pasta, noodles

·        Vegetables, legumes

·        Fruit

·        Milk, yoghurt, cheese

·        Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, legumes

     A healthy diet requires having the appropriate amount from each group each day. The number of serves for an adult male for groups in order are 9, 5, 2, 2, 1.  The graph below gives a visual representation of the proportions of each food group.   This is for a working adult male.  Women’s portions are similar but with slightly less bread and cereals.

Examples serves are:

Bread – 2 slices or 1 cup cooked rice

Vegetables – 75g of cooked vegetables

Fruit – 1 medium piece (eg apple)

Dairy – 250 ml of milk

Meat  - 100 grams

 

Maintain the variety of food within each category and drink plenty of water.
